Cannot set a password

I have a couple of spreadsheets that I want to set password.
I did:
Prepare - Encrypt Document - type a password - Confirm a password

When I try to close the file, it says:
"Microsoft Office Excel canno access the file ..... There are several
possible reasons.
*The file name or path does not exist.
*The file is being used by another program.
*The workbook you are trying to save has the same as a currently open
workbook."

Is there a way to fix this?
Thank you in advance.

Do any of the reasons apply?

Fix it/them first.

But why are you wanting to Encrypt just to add a password to open?

No, none of them apply.

But why are you wanting to Encrypt just to add a password to open?

Because it contains credit card numbers and SSN, etc.

Do you have any ideas how to fix it?

The word "Prepare" in the statement

"Prepare - Encrypt Document - type a password - Confirm a password"

is not familiar to me using Excel 2003

Is this the 2007 version you are running?
