Dates coverted to formulas

I have a spreadsheet that is coverting dates to formulas. For example, if I
enter "1/1/04" and hit enter, it is converted into "=1/1/4", and the result
is 1 divided by 1 divided by 4, or 0.25. Any idea what setting(s) I need to
change to make it behave how I want?

Thanks.
