How do I put in the date without the year automatically a part of it? I
want just 12/4 and no year in a box on my data sheet because I want the
column to be short.

If it's a date, it has 3 parts: month, day, and year. And if you intend to do
date arithmetic on thse numbers, you must enter them as dates. Excel will add
the year for you when you enter just the month and day.

You can format the cell with the custom number format "m/y".

Change the format of the cell to m/d.
Excel will store this as 12/4/2005, but you will see it as 12/4.
This assumes you are using month/day. Reverse the letters for day/month.
