Formats not being saved

I have a spreadsheet that has conditional formats for most of the cells (1600
rows by 75 columns). When I open the file, most of the fomatting is gone and
I have to re-enter the formats. The file size is at 5MB, now. Why is this
happening and what can I do to fix it?
