Saving text with commas in a .csv file then converting to a .txt f
 

I need to get an Excel sheet (Office 2007) into a text format that is comma
seperated with quotations around the cells that contain text.

I can save the sheet as a .csv file which handles the commas, but when I
change the file extension to a .txt type I end up getting quotations around
the existing quotes. For example "test" in the .csv file appears as
"""test""" when I open it in the .txt file.

Any ideas?

It is my experience that, when you open a renamed csv file, on the first
screen, it will show """ around text. However, with your text identifier set
to ", when you click on finish, it will open correctly, eg """text""" becomes
"text".

That doesn't seem to be the case here. Text only shows up as text with no
quotes and any text that has quotes appears with triple qoutes. I'm not sure
what you mean by "when you click on finish".

Any other thoughts?

You obviously have to insert qyoutes before and after text, before you save
the file as a .csv. What I then also normally do, is to rename the file to a
..txt. On opening it, you then get the file import wizard, where you select
comma (iso Tab) as the delimiter, and also set your text identifier as ",
before clicking on finish. Since " is the default text identifier, I notice
that the additional quotes dissappear as soon as you set the comma as
delimiter. When I save a file as .CSV, and re-open it, it opens exactly as
saved, no extra quotes.
