Open Excel 2007 without Updating Links
 

The 2003 version of Excel would ask if you wanted to update links when
opening a file with external links. Excel 2007 updates these links
automatically without asking. How can I put this back to manual?

There is an "Ask to Update Links" option in the General section of Excel
Options (which is accessed via a button in the lower right corner of the
Office button menu).
