I replaced a file in error with a blank file. Is there any way to retrieve
the original file?

generally no but a couple of things that may help:-

Did you mail it to someone and if so is there a copy in your sent items.
Is it kept on a backed-up drive from which you could retrieve a copy.

Will system restore get back data files? I understand it doesn't.

Sadly, system restore won't help you

You are correct. It is a system restore not a data restore
