excel 2003 cannot find file
When I double click a filename in my documents excel opens with a message
saying it can't find the file. If I open excel first and then go file/open and browse to the file, it opens no problem. I have re-installed Excell and it still won't work. |

It may be a problem with the file association. Does your file name contains a
space or other non-letter or non-digit characters? If this is the case, open My Computer, Menu Tools Folder Options tab File Types. Find xls extension, then click the button Advanced, select Open then click on Edit. You shoud see [open("%1")] in the lower part of the window where DDE is enabled. Stephane Quenson. Sometimes one of these works when you're having trouble with double clicking on
the file in windows explorer: Tools|Options|General|Ignore other applications (uncheck it) --- or --- Close Excel and Windows Start Button|Run excel /unregserver then Windows Start Button|Run excel /regserver The /unregserver & /regserver stuff resets the windows registry to excel's factory defaults. Maybe one of these will work for you. Sevans wrote: When I double click a filename in my documents excel opens with a message saying it can't find the file. Thank you, I have checked what you say, and "Use DDE" box is checked and
[open("%1")] is in the DDE message section of this window, but the xls files still do not open. Excel opens but no file appears, even though I am trying to open files with no spaces or special characters in the filename. -- sevans "squenson via OfficeKB.com" wrote: It may be a problem with the file association. OK... I unticked the ignore other applications box and now this is REALLY
wierd. I get 4 error msgs saying windows can't find the file, which is the path of the filename I am trying to open. e.g Can't find My.xls, then can't find Documents.xls, etc. If I click ok on all of the error msgs it opens the file! When I try start| run| excel/unregsrevr and regserver it says windows can't find the files. This is all way over my head. I am just glad you guys are out there and know what is going on! -- sevans "Dave Peterson" wrote: Sometimes one of these works when you're having trouble with double clicking on the file in windows explorer: Tools|Options|General|Ignore other applications (uncheck it) --- or --- Close Excel and Windows Start Button|Run excel /unregserver then Windows Start Button|Run excel /regserver The /unregserver & /regserver stuff resets the windows registry to excel's factory defaults. My first guess is that you didn't type in the command correctly.
There's a space between excel and /unregserver And watch your typing. Spelling mistakes count against you! There's S Evans wrote: OK... I tried all of those things and it still says it can't find the files. Does
the /unregserver and /regserver work the same in Vista? I did as you suggested and got no errors, but all that seemed to happen was Excel started each time. Please help Dave! It should work in Vista (an Operating system--not an application).
Did you try the ignore other applications suggestion? Do you have more than one version of excel installed? Are you sure you did the /regserver and /unregserver stuff to the correct version? What version of excel are you running? (That's right, I don't have another guess!) John Bower wrote: I tried all of those things and it still says it can't find the files.
