Cell/column auto adjusts width to longest text string

Is it possible to have Excel automatically extend the width of a column as
text is entered. That is, instead of the text spilling over into the
adjoining cell, the column automatically increases in width. Answer needed
for one of our teachers ASAP - college instructor claims it can be done - I
am unable to find it anywhere.

Select the columns and then in the menu Format-Columns-Auto-Width

Thanks John - but there is no "Auto-Width". There is "Autofit" which works
after the fact - that is one is adjusting the column after the text is
entered - of which I am aware of a number of ways - i.e. double click the
line dividing columns. What the instructors said is possible is for Excel to
"real time" adjust the colum as one enters text.

What version of Excel are you using, that may be your issue, mine here is
2002 SP3 and it is just below width on the menu, the professor may have a
version like mine if yours does not have it.
