XL file opens but does not display

When I "open" some XL files, recently edited OK, no file appears on screen.
Screen remains grey, toolbars are mostly greyed out. Backup file loads OK. It
appears workbook is hidden, but I did not call for that to happen when file
was last open. Why should this happen? How to stop in future?

Hi,

My assumption: Just check whether you have a minimzed the workbook. Look at
the bottom left corner. If the workbook is minimized, the all command in the
menu would appear grey.

Can you tell if the workbook actually loaded? Maybe using file|print preview???

If you can see the data to be printed, then maybe the worksheet window is just
out of view of the application window.

Try: Window|Arrange|tiled and resize the way you like it.

If excel didn't open the file...

Sometimes one of these works when you're having trouble with double clicking on
the file in windows explorer:

Tools|Options|General|Ignore other applications (uncheck it)

--- or ---

Close Excel and
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /unregserver
then
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /regserver

The /unregserver & /regserver stuff resets the windows registry to excel's
factory defaults.

Maybe one of these will work for you.

Thanks Guys for your comments. They did not quite meet the point in question.
I discovered that the whole workbook was hidden, and could be restored to
view by the Unhide command. As I had last closed/saved the file when in full
view I do not understand why it should reload as hidden.
