gridlines in excel

I have an excel file. I am working in excel 2000. I want to show gridlines
but when I select the toggle tool, nothing happens.

Perhaps you have the cells' background color set to "White".

Select all cells and format to "no color" or "no fill" if using the coloring
icon.
