Opening an Excel link in new window

Currently I'm working on an Excel spreadsheet that has cells that link to a
Word document and others that are linked to a location on Connect server.
When any of the links are opened, the Excel spreadsheet closes. Is there a
way to have the link open in a new window and still retain the Excel in the
background?
