When you say "inactivated" - Are you able to click it at all If so what happens. Button are either form buttons associated to a Macro or Command Buttons associated with and event ( eg , on click) It might be that the Command button has its Enabled property set to false (disabled) by another procedure, or that the Forms button has no macro associated with it. You are fortunate.
Now you won't be tempted to merge cells which would give you all sorts of problems. The workbook is most likely "shared" which makes merging cells unavailable.
