Excel 2007 very slow to save files and cannot exit

When I save certain workbooks (in compatibility mode) the save function runs
for 20 minutes at full CPU utilization. When it finally completes, the usual
buttons at top right of the window are gone. Also the open and exit
functions are diabled. Exit can only be achieve by killing the task through
task manager. At other times the problem does not occur.
Makes it very hard to upgrade from Excel 2002.

Try switching off compatibility checking: sometimes this is very slow.

If the compatibilty checker doesn't find any problems it doesn't seem to give
you the opportunity to switch it off. Have I missed something? On other
files it finds minor problems (color outside old range) but saves at full
speed. On this file there are no messages, just very slow saving. The only
special thing about this problem file is that there are many external
references to cells in it in other worksbooks. it has no external references
itself.

If you run the compatibility checker you can uncheck the box that says check
compatibility when saving.

Of course if running the compat check is fast then thats not the problem!
