Can't group a Sharepoint List in Excel by Created date

I have an Excel spreadsheet with a data connection to a Sharepoint list. I am
trying to group by month on the created field in Sharepoint which is the
system generated date field for when a list item was created. I keep getting
an error that it cannot group by this field. In looking at the date field it
has the date and time. I have changed the format in Excel to just the date
and it still won't work. In the pivot table it shows the date and time even
though I have changed the format. If I copy and paste the data to another
worksheet that does not have a data connection it works even with the date
and time. Is this some bug? Does anyone know how to get around it. I am using
Excel 2003 and Sharepoint 2.0

I think I found the workaround. I recreated my pivot table using the wizard.
I clicked on the "created" field in the layout mode and it was set to general
so I changed it to date and now it is working.
