Excel 2003 Have tried formatting the column/cells in special format for
zips - no go
Tried text format, them apostrophe before zip - did n't work

format - custom 00000 should work

Give it a custom format of: 00000
(select the cells|Format|cells|number tab|custom and type 00000 in that type
box.)

If your zip codes could be 5 or 9 digits, you could use a custom format of:
[99999]00000-0000;00000

Although I don't know why your previous attempt didn't work.
