Corrupt .xltm
 

I have office 2007. Today I opened a templete made some changes and saved it
with an updated name. Now every time I try to open the file I get the message
"Excel cannot open the file 'Estimator 5.22.07.xltm' because the file format
of file extension is not valid. Verify that the file has not been corrupted
and that the file extension matches the format of the file." I can still
opent the older file 'Estimator 5.10.07.xltm' What gives? I only chaged some
values, very basic changes. The only thing I can think of is that my computer
ran Automatic update and did update 1 thing. Also, this is the second time I
have made these changes and resaved with the same results.

I would try taking all the periods out of the file name, I would be
surprised if XL would have an idea of the extension with them

Sorry I forgot to mention that. I renamed it to 'Test' with no change.

The beauty of the new file format is that you can take a copy, rename the
extension to *.zip and see the text content of the file. It's not
necessarily for the novice, but with care you should be able to correct the
issue internally or delete just the 'component' causing the issue

When I rename the file to .zip it still opens with excel. is there a trick to
doing this? If you open it with notepad every thing is jumbled.

I've got your file. To rename correctly in windows you have to show the
extensions in windows. It's a folder properties option in Windows.

What you are seeing is estimator, actually what is there is estimator.xltm
by not showing extensions, renaming estimator (as you see it) results in
estimator.zip.xltm so it is still a xl file. That is why I ask you for the
original xlt file as I think this may be your issue
