NO values in Auto-filter drop-down

I have a column with 721 values. I placed Auto-filter in the row just above
the data. There are no blank rows among my rows of data. However, the
drop-down shows NO values.

The workbook is not shared or protected.

what do you recommend?

thanks in advance!! Jane

Answer: NO values in Auto-filter drop-down

Hi Jane,

I'm sorry to hear that you're having trouble with the Auto-filter in Excel. Here are a few things you can try to get it working:
  1. Check for hidden rows: Sometimes, even if there are no blank rows in your data, there may be hidden rows that are causing the issue. To check for hidden rows, select the entire worksheet by clicking the box at the top-left corner of the sheet (above row 1 and to the left of column A). Then, go to the Home tab and click on the Format dropdown in the Cells group. Select Hide & Unhide Unhide Rows. If there are any hidden rows, they will be revealed and you can then delete them.
  2. Check for merged cells: If there are any merged cells in the column you're trying to filter, this can also cause issues with the Auto-filter. To check for merged cells, select the entire worksheet as described above, then go to the Home tab and click on the Find & Select dropdown in the Editing group. Select Go To Special, then choose the option for "Blanks" and click OK. This will select any blank cells, including those that may be hidden due to merged cells. You can then unmerge any merged cells by going to the Home tab and clicking on the Merge & Center dropdown in the Alignment group. Select Unmerge Cells.
  3. Check for data type: Make sure that the data in the column you're trying to filter is in the correct format. For example, if you're trying to filter a column of dates, make sure that the cells are formatted as dates and not as text. To check the data type, select the column and go to the Home tab. In the Number group, you can see the data type of the selected cells. If it's not what you expect, you can change it by selecting the appropriate option from the dropdown.

I hope one of these solutions works for you!

NO values in Auto-filter drop-down

If you remove the data|filter|autofilter, then select the entire range to be
filtered and reapply the data|Filter|autofilter, does it work ok?

I never let excel guess at the range to filter, sort, chart, ...

It doesn't always guess what I want.

NO values in Auto-filter drop-down

Remove the filter, put a header on top, then select all 722 rows header
included and then apply the filter. Still the same?

NO values in Auto-filter drop-down

HI Dave and Peo,
Your suggestion worked.

The weird thing is that I have always applied auto-filter in that manner I
did and have never had a problem.

Oh well, perhaps, on of those days.

thanks so much for the help! :) jane
