date format won't show

I have a problem - I have inserted a date such as 12/10/2007 and it usually
will automatically knows it's a date and formats it as date BUT now in my
worksheet when i put in a date it won't allow me to format to date (even
though it displays in the formmual bar) and won't wllow me to change the
alignment to vertical? Anybudy know why? It keeps displaying a seruial number
and won't budge !!!

ctrl-` (control-backquote)
is the shortcut for
tools|Options|view tab|checking/unchecking Formulas.

CTRL + `(backquote) toggles formula view on/off.

You are in formula view with your dates showing incorrectly.
