Default the curser is highlighting multiple cells instead of individuals

The curser does not move to individual cells, it automatically highlights
multiple cells instead. I have shut down and restarted but the poblem
continues

Default the curser is highlighting multiple cells instead of individuals

If you see "EXT" or "ADD" on the Excel Status bar lower
right hand side in one of the small boxes then hit F8
until it goes away, or hit Shift+F8 release and select
a single cell.

a problem that I have not had for a very long time.

Can you please tell me significance of "EXT" or "ADD" on the Excel Status
bar?? What does they mean and for what they are used??
