I have windows xp with office. when I go into start/programs and click on
excel...system asks me if I want to install...and excel won't come up (was
working fine until a few weeks ago)

but if I go into my computer....find office under prgrams and click on
excel...I get msg about installing excel, but I can bypass it and excel come
uo.

what is causing this and what is slution

A couple of things to try............

HelpDetect and Repair may get you going again.

Alternative....................

Close Excel first and On the Windows Taskbar

1) StartRun "excel.exe /unregserver"(no quotes)OK.
2) StartRun "excel.exe /regserver"(no quotes)OK.
See the space between exe and /regserver

You might have to designate a full path to excel.exe.
In that case StartRun "C:\yourpath\excel.exe /regserver"(no quotes)OK.

Yes, this fixed it...excel comes up fine now

Just curious........I proposed two alternate solutions.

Can you post back and let us know which of the two did the job?
