is it possible to produce a total row in a pivot table that will sum

If the data field is summarized by Average, the total row should

Custom Totals In Pivot Table
If you leave the subtotals on Automatic, they should show the same
summary function that's used in the column. So, in your example, three columns would show Sum in the subtotals, and three would show the average. If you use a custom subtotal, e.g. Sum, that will apply to all columns.
