excel 2002 formatting problem

Excel displays and treats numbers with decimal point as dates (1.1
displays as 01.jan, for example). Cell formatting does not help.
Replacing whole MS Office with another copy, which worked fine on
another computer, also did not have any effect. What could it be and
how to solve the problem? Thank you very much.
