What are you getting when you hit CTRL+ semicolon (;)?

If you are getting a decimal number instead, then check your Transition
options. Tools-Options-Transistion (tab)-Sheet Options (section).
Uncheck "Transition formula evaluation" and "Transition formula entry".

Sounds strange.

How about if you just type a semicolon without using CTRL? Do you get a
semicolon as expected?
Try typing todays date manually. Does it show?
Verify the formula bar to see if anything shows there. Check the text color
for the cell...or check conditional formatting for the cell.
