Default Pivot Table Filter Drop Down not working

I use pivot tables all the time. Suddenly, the check boxes are not responding
when trying to filter results. I've restarted excel several times to no
avail. I tried several files, but all had the same issue.

Have you refreshed the pivot table? Are those items in the current data?

What version of Excel are you using?
Is the source data in Excel, or external?
Do the check boxes clear, but those items stay visible in the pivot table?
