Function does not work unless I double click the cell and push ent

then it works. It has done this many times before and I have no idea what I
am doing wrong or how to fix it.

For further clairification... I have two cells D:2 and E:2 I wish to muliply
and have the total on F:2 So in the cell of F:2 I have the function...
=PRODUCT(D2*E2) .
When I first saved it and opened and used it for several weeks it works fine
and does what I want it to do, but then one day it stops working and now it
will only multiply the problem if I double click on F:2 cell and then push
enter, then I will get the total. Why is it doing that??? I have had to
recreate this spread sheet twice and it takes two hours to do so, so I am
hoping to avoid that. I have checked to see that if it is the locked postion
that is doing it but it does not make a difference.

Can anyone help??
Thanks
Kim.

You may have calculation set to manual. Go to Tools--Options--Calculations
and select the Automatic box.

My guess is that calculation has been turned to Manual.

ToolsOptionsCalculation. Set to "automatic".

Save workbook.

Now you are going to ask "how did it get turned to manual?"

Common problem......not yet fixed in 2007 version.

ToolsOptionsCalculation can be Auto or Manual.

Excel takes the Calculation mode each session from the settings on the first
workbook opened in that session.

i.e. If you saved Book1 with calc mode in manual and opened it first, calc
mode would be in Manual.

If you saved Book2 with calc mode in auto and opened it after Book1, Book2
would be in manual mode(Excel ignores the auto calc mode in this case).

If you close Book1 before opening Book2, Book2 will be in auto calc mode.

Confusing enough? <g

See Gord's response for an explanation of why it happened.
