get #value when I open a workbook that has links to another book, if the
second isn't open. I do click "do not update". I do not want to do the
break links. This doesn't error everytime and I cannot figure out why it
does sometimes and not others.

Do you use different versions of excel to open the workbook--or different pcs???

Jim Rech posted a registry tweak:

yes, I do email workbooks sometimes and do not know what version they may be
using. But I get the #value sometimes on my own machine. Just don't see a
pattern of when it happens. I cannot make it do it right now. I expect the
different versions will be the most common issue here.

I have an example of a file I send to the bank everyday for past 3 years.
Just started happening 3 months ago. Wonder if they changed versions then.

Maybe the registry tweak will work.
