excel 2007 does not open file on first try

when I double click an excel file, the excel program opens but the file is
not opened. When I click on maximize, it appears. No, the file is NOT
minimized on the bottom. It just does not appear. This is the same for all
kinds of excel files, even ones saved under 2007. Is there a fix for this?
