Default Data Validation: Store cell address instead of value in the cell?

I have a list that is used to force entry of specific values into a range of
cells. However, instead of storing the user-selected value, can I store the
cell address (e.g., =E3), while displaying the selected value?

For example, allowed values are stored in E3:E5 ("Yes", "No", "Maybe").
These values should be entered into A1:A10. The dropdown selection list in
A1:A10 should read Yes No Maybe (in a vertical list, of course). Can the
actual contents of A1:A10 be the cell addresses, in this format: =E4

I hope I've made my situation clear enough. I have a large, complex Excel
application that will definitely benefit from a solution to this issue.

Thanks,
Bill
