Select your range to format A1:X999 (say) (include as many columns as you want)

With A1 the activecell
format|Conditional formatting
Formula is: =left(a1,1)="-"
and give it a nice format

Dave,

Have similar situation but not sure how your solution works. Have a
spreadsheet with variable number of rows but fixed number of columns. Want
to color entire row if value in column C meets requirements. Interpreting
your select range at A1:X999, I put cursor at corner of left of column A,
above row 1 so all rows/columns are highlighted. Then went into conditional
formatting and put in formula and format color. When I hit ok, the line
above the row that should have been highlighted was highlighted and only the
first two columns were highlighted. What did I do wrong?

Ok - figured out thru trial and error - had to change cell value from C2 to
$C2 and use paste special/format and that seemed to work.

Thanks anyway

If you select your range (Just select the range you want to conditionally
format), then you can write the formula using $c and the row number for the
activecell.

Excel will adjust the formula for the other cells in that selected range.

(But copy|paste special|formats could work if there were no other formatting
that you were afraid of losing.)
