field data truncated in DBF file from Excel

I'm running into a problem when saving an Excel file in DBF 4 or 3 format.

Field data is being truncated when I do the save as to the DBF format. It
seems to be only the longest fields in a column. I have a field with lengths
from 80 to 40 characters and the fields from 72 up to 80 are truncated by 9
characters. I have the field expanded to accommodate the widest records when
I save the file.

Does anyone have any idea what may be causing this?

Your help will be appreciated

Dan

Hi Dan,

I've had this problem when the columns weren't expanded far enough but you
say that you've done that. Have you tried expanding them quite a bit wider
than necessary?

Yes, I can overcome the problem by expanding the fields usually by a few
characters but in this case I have to expand it by 20 characters in order to
overcome the problem.

There has got to be some logical explanation for why this happens doesn't
there?
