Hi,

I'd very much appreciate any help anyone could offer....

I'm in the process of creating a worksheet with the goal of being able to
filter and sort several hundred of photographs based on their various
attributes (ie: size, vertical, horizontal, black & white, color, etc.).

For example, I'd like to be able to look at only the 4x6 photos, or only the
black and white photos, etc.

The problem is, when I apply the autofilter, the photos from the rows which
should not be displayed get all stacked on top of one another at the bottom
of the document.

For example, if I use auto filter to view all of the black and white photos,
the color photos appear in a "pile" at the bottom of the document.

Here's how the worksheet is layed out - each entry is in it's own cell:

photo 4x6 horizontal black and white
photo 3x5 horizontal black and white
photo 4x6 vertical color
photo 4x6 horizontal black and white


Any ideas? I'm running Windows XP Pro, Excel 2000.

Personally, I would put the images into the comment boxes(which will pop-up
when moused over), in a column with a link in the cell to the actual file.
The links can be created easily with Jim Cone's fine add-in called
ListFiles.............both the links and the commentboxes will sort/filter
with the rows.....

I see what you're after, and I hadn't thought of it that way. In Excel's
"mind", the photos aren't what's important, it's their attributes that are.

If I understand you though, I won't be able to see the photos unless I mouse
over them, correct? If so, that would be a problem, as this human user needs
to be able to look at the results of the filter to make further evaluations.
:-)

Any other ideas?

They could just draw the mouse down the photo column to show them one at a
time. Or, if the picture were contained completely within a cell, it will
sort with the row......but this makes for tiny pictures or fat rows......or,
if perhaps the attributes could also be coded in to the filename, then
sorting might could occur that way.

You're right about the fat rows, but that's no problem, since the most
important thing for us is to be able to see the photos.

I did take care to size all of the rows so that they were big enough to
contain the largest photo, which definitely helped with the sorting function,
but for some reason the photos still won't stay with their cells for the
Autofilter function. Wierd.

Anyway, I appreciate your thoughts.

ONly other ting I can think of is to use a rectangle drawing object inside
each cell and fill it with the picture........then it will follow the
Autofilter......
