How can I keep zeros in the beginning of a number in excel

Everytime I type in a number that starts with zeros in an excel cell - excel
automatically drops the zeros from the number how can I format the cell to
keep the zero?

To enter it as text, either precede the entry with an apostrophe or preformat
the col as Text. If you want it retained as numbers but to display the
leading zeros in the cells, preformat the col as custom, type: 0000 (for
example)

On the Menu Bar, click Format, Cells, Number, and choose Custom -- enter
