I want excel to print a page of blank cells with gridlines -- but I cannot
get it to do this.

Good for chess or checker boarding:

1. select some cells
2. File PrintArea Set PrintArea
3. FIle Page Setup... Sheet and then check Gridlines

Select a range that will use up a page (experiment with A1:J52)
With this selected, use File | Print Area | Set print area
Use File | Print preview (good to have this as an icon on the toolbar)
Within Preview use Page Set up; open Sheet tab and specify gridlines to be
printed
Print page
done!
