excel 2003 saved file will not open without a blank workbook open

Excel saved files will not open from desktop or as received attachments
without a blank workbbok open first. How can this be corrected so that double
clicking will open the intended workbook without opening a blank from start
menu?

Sometimes one of these works when you're having trouble with double clicking on
the file in windows explorer:

Tools|Options|General|Ignore other applications (uncheck it)

--- or ---

Close Excel and
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /unregserver
then
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /regserver

The /unregserver & /regserver stuff resets the windows registry to excel's
factory defaults.

Maybe one of these will work for you.

Dave,
Thanks but, the ignore other options was unchecked and when I went to run
the "excel/unregserver" error came up saying, can not find file name.
Any other suggesstions?

Put a space between excel and /unregserver (and same with the second portion)
