Default Allowing data entry in protected sheets

I have an application written by the former holder of the position I now
occupy that allows data entry in a protected sheet. I need to make
modifications to the thing so I made a copy and unprotected the copy so I
could make the mods. When I protect the sheet I modified it will not allow
data entry. Message about it being a protected sheet come up. The original
allows the data entry how did they do it?
