incorrect value on link to a closed workbook
 

I have a workbook which uses a sum to check the balance on a list of figures.
The sum adds together cells from other workbooks in various locations. When
the file is opened the values brought back by the sum are incorrect. The
only way to correct them is F2 & enter. F9 does not work.

If you're using xl2002+, there's an option that may have been toggled off.

Open the workbook with the links
Edit|Links|click the Startup Prompt button
If you have "don't display the alert and don't update automatic links" chosen,
choose something else.

This is a workbook level setting.

Another way to update the links after opening the file:
edit|links|Update values
