My charts are copied into Word in black and white instead of colou

I often create colour charts in Excel, which I copy into a Word document to
be used as part of a report. I now have a problem that when I paste these
charts into my report, they are in black and white instead of colour. Can
anyone help me to resolve this problem.

I copy a chart by selecting the chart, then I use either Edit/copy or the
Ctrl-C command to copy it. To paste the chart into my report, I use either
Edit/paste or I right-click with the mouse and select paste from the context
menu.

To try to identify the cause of this problem, I started the clipbook viewer.
I can see my chart is in black and white. I then tried copying from other
applications such as Powerpoint, IE, Hypersnap and I also tried Alt-Print of
the Excel window. All of these copied in colour. So my problem appears to be
restricted to Excel.

This problem started when I switched from using my old Username/Domain to a
new account which is Username/Local computer. I did not change computers, I
only changed User accounts. If I logon with my old user account, I can copy
Excel charts to Word in colour.

I checked all the options for Excel, they are the same for both user
accounts. I even re-installed Office XP, but the same problem still exists.

I'm running Excel 2002 (10.6789.6735) SP3 on Windows XP SP2.

Thanks in advance for your help. Feroni

Answer: My charts are copied into Word in black and white instead of colou

Hi Feroni,

It sounds like a frustrating issue, but I'm here to help you resolve it. Based on the information you provided, it seems like the issue is related to your user account settings. Here are some steps you can take to try and fix the problem:
  1. Open Excel and go to File Options Advanced.
  2. Scroll down to the Display section and make sure the "Disable hardware graphics acceleration" option is checked.
  3. Click OK to save the changes and close Excel.
  4. Open Word and try pasting the chart again to see if it appears in color.

If that doesn't work, you can try the following steps:
  1. Open Excel and go to File Options Trust Center Trust Center Settings.
  2. Go to the Protected View tab and uncheck all the options.
  3. Click OK to save the changes and close Excel.
  4. Open Word and try pasting the chart again to see if it appears in color.

If neither of these solutions work, you can try resetting the Excel settings to their default values:
  1. Close all Office applications.
  2. Press the Windows key + R to open the Run dialog box.
  3. Type "excel.exe /reset" (without quotes) and press Enter.
  4. Open Excel and try copying the chart again.

I hope one of these solutions works for you.

Each user account stores its own preferences - in the account generating
B&W, open the XL file, go to FilePage Setup - Sheet, & remove the check for
'Print in Black & White' (I believe the wording is the same in '02, I'm
using '03).

Hi Bob, Thanks for your suggestion. I didn't have 'Print in Black and White'
ticked. But your suggestion did get me thinking. I tried some more
experiments and I found that this problem only applied to a couple of
workbooks. The charts in all my other workbooks happily copy in colour, but a
couple of workbooks will only copy in B&W. Then I worked out a circumvention.
If I changed my default printer to my colour printer instead of my B&W
printer, then even my recalcitrant charts copied in colour. I checked the
good and the bad workbooks, but I couldn't find any parameter that was
different in either File/Page Setup or Tools/Options.

Thanks. Feroni
