how do i enter a date before jan 1, 1900 into excel?

any date entered before jan 1 1900 is being entered as text.. I understand
the dating system so this didn't surprise me.. any way around it? can I enter
a date before Jan 1 1900 and have it stored as a date.. not text?

this would go for jan 1, 1904 on a Mac as well..
thanks
