How do I get negative numbers to show as brackets?

Change the regional settings in windowsstartcontrol panel regional
settings, there you can change default,
otherwise use a custom format like 0.00_);(0.00)

If you want to make a permanent change you can do that via control panel in
windows in regional settings

For a workbook level change you can use a format
(FormatCells...NumberCustom), like so.

0.00;(0.00);0

Check here for some help on this

Sorry, Excel 2002 at least does NOT use the Windows default. You have to
use a custom format.

I can change this:
windows start button|settings|control panel|regional settings applet
Under the currency tab, negative number format to include ()'s and xl2002 uses
that for me.
