excel won't sort on a column of data
 

I have a spreadsheet which will sort well enough, unless I choose Col A to
sort on. then nothing happens. It's as if the originaotr somehow disabled
option to sort on that column. Is there some kind of lock I need to look for
an unlock? I've never run into this before.
