Linked Workbooks
 

When I open a particular workbook I get an automatic message which says that
the workbook you are opening contains automatic links to another
workbook...would you like to update this workbook with changes made the
other workbook?

The problem is that I have no idea where the "other workbook" is referenced
in the workbook I am trying to open. I have gone through the workbook cell
by cell but haven't been able to locate where the "automatic link" is. Is
there any way to find it?

Hi Dave,

Try EditLinks and Open Source button. It may give you
more of an idea of what you are looking for.

Thanks Martin.

Part of my problem is that the "other workbook" has been changed (i.e. it
can't be found).

I was hoping that there was some excel capablity to look at the workbook
from the back (i.e. look at it in such a manner which would identify which
cells have references to the "other workbook"). I have scrolled through the
whole work book and can't find where the link is...but haven't been able to
figure out how to find and / or purge the dead links.

Hi Dave,

Without the original file I don't think you will find much joy.
You can try copying and pasting the file to a fresh workbook
using the F5gotospecialvisible cells only method which will
highlight any cells that are reliant on the link as #REF but all that
does is make you realise what a nightmare it is to try to clean it up.
Unless of course there are only one or two linked cells.

Hi Dave!
If you want to see the links - go to "Edit" then "Links". This will tell
you which of the workbook are linked. Also you have the facility to break
these links if you wish.

Hi Zia,

Is that an option in the newer versions? I use Excel 2000 and
I don't get any option to break the links.
