what to do if the save as scroll down menu is not responding?

when I try to save a document i click file/save as, when the menu appears I
use the scroll down menu to save the document in the folder i want but the
scroll down menu is not responding? This problem also appears to be with
word, access etc, all office products.

Sometimes, it takes a little time for windows/excel to get that list of all the
files that are in that folder.

If you keep hundreds of files in that folder, you may want to reorganize a bit.
(Create a bunch of subfolders and move workbooks into those subfolders.)

It may help.

Are you on a network? The administrator can force where your documents are
saved. No matter where you try to put them they will only go to the default
the admin has created
