specify date source for x-axis (adjacent to data column in Excel)

MS Excel 2002: From a column of dates and an adjacent column of dollar
values, how do I specify the dates in the first column as the source of dates
displayed on the x-axis of a related chart (in another worksheet in the same
workbook)? The plotted dollar data shows correctly but the dates on the
x-axis start at 1/1/00 rather than the dates in the data worksheet.

Make sure that there are no blank cells in the column of dates, and that the
dates not only look like dates to a human observer, but are interpreted as
numerical dates by Excel. (Excel uses 1, 2, 3, etc. along the X axis if the
category labels or values are non-numerical. In date terms, Excel starts
with day 1 at 1-Jan-1900, or 1/1/00.)
