time scale proportional using a column chart - not just for scatte

I have had 2 requests in the past two weeks from quality dept. on how to
chart data with the x axis time in Hrs and the Y being some measurement
result(ie. roll hardness, #particles)
I know we can do this with the XY- Scatter chart but both groups want to use
the Column chart -
The X-axis just looks at the HRS and puts them same distance with each other
no matter what the value is-

I can't believe there is not a way around this to make the column chart X
axis(independent axis) to be spaced based on the ACTUAL values

What am I missing???

Thanks,
Barb

You are missing the fact that the X axis on a column chart is a list of
categories, not values. You are right that if you want values you should
use XY.

Hi babs,

Excel can't build a column chart with time as the x-Axis. However it can
build a column chart using dates as the x-Axis.

This suggests a way to fake a column chart that has hours as its x-Axis - we
just need to convert hh:mm to yy:mm and chart that.

I have placed a sample file at
http://edferrero.com/content/HourlyColumnChart.xls
that shows how to do this.

I agree with you but for some reason they want to visually show the BAr for
each value with the x being time (not category) - seems like you should be
able to do this????? - is there really no way ?
Thanks,

It's not you who are missing an important fact, but those making the
requests.

A line chart is very effective at showing variation of a quantity over
time. Use markers to emphasize the observed data, or remove them to
emphasize the lines and the trends they show.

Column and bar charts are better than line charts at showing values for
discrete categories.
