Vertical and Horizontal axis values

I am creating a chart for an economics project. I want the "y" axis to
display total costs and the "x" to display total output. I then want the
series to graph average costs, number of employees, etc., all of which appear
in the chart. When I select the table and create the chart, I get the proper
"y" values, but charted by the total number of rows for "x". I have tried
re-locating columns, but my axis do not change. I am getting so frustrated!!
Thank you for your help.

Hi Rob,

You have not said what version of Excel you are using. Always a good idea
when asking how to perform an operation because it can vary between versions.

Anyway if I understand you question correctly then here are the guidelines
for Excel 2007 and Excel 2002. I think that xl2003 is same as xl2002 but not
tested.

xl 2007

Right click the series line on the chart
Click Select data
Select the Series name (In the bottom left quarter of the dialog box)
Click Edit at the top of the bottom right quarter of the dialog box.
Click in the Axis Label range field (If any data exists in the field then
drag the mouse over it to highlight it all)
Use the mouse to select the range for axis titles.
Click OK and OK again.

xl2002

Right click the series line on the chart
Click Source data
Select Series tab
Select the series in the Series block in the dialog box
Click in Category (x) labels field
Use the mouse to select the range for axis titles.
Cick OK

Hope it helps but if not what you are after the pls include version of xl
when explaining further.

Make an XY chart, not a line chart.
