Can I put pictures in a cell and get them in an axis of a graph?

I m using Excel 2003 and charting activities relating to phases of the moon.
To make the chart more interesting, rather than having just "Full", "First
Quarter", etc. along the axis, I would like to use miniature pictures that
are saved as jpeg files.

When I insert the file it does not go into the cell but floats on top.

I can copy the pictures into the chart once it is created but his is rather
long-winded as it has to be done for each chart separtely.

You can insert the image files directly into the chart, using the same menu
approach as you are using to insert them into the worksheet. Once you have
the images in one chart the way you like, you could make a copy of the chart
and change its data source, or you could copy the images (hold ctrl while
clicking to select multiple images), copy the set of images, select another
chart, and paste.
