Month Date Part Description Part # Defect # of Scrap Parts

I have 2 worksheets that I enter data in with the headings above. The only
difference is # of scrap parts on one of the databases is scrap and the other
is repaired parts. The date field will not line up with each other as there
could be 3 entries wih the same date on one database and none on the other.
(The month column is a calculated field to show month and year so I can
filter the database by month). I have several pivot tables and charts from
these Excel databases and the whole thing is 1 file.

I now need to create a chart that shows # of defects found by date. This
would be a line chart showing the number of defects in a single day. Each
datapoint would be # of scrapped parts + # of repaired parts. I would
display the last 30 days or so.

Hi Kitty,

I'm not clear on the problem you are having. If place the Date field in the
Row area and the # field in the data area everything should work fine if the
dates are all dates. But it also looks like you are plotting using the Month
field.

Your problem probably is the Month field which you say is calculated to show
month and year. It's not clear from your question if the Month field is the
one you are trying to plot against?

Assume that it is, then instead of creating a Month field use the Date field
as follows:

First all the entries in the Date field must Excel recognized dates, no
blanks, no non-dates. Create the pivot table putting the Date field into the
Row area, don't add the month field. After the pivot table is created place
the cursor in the Date field of the pivot table and choose the command Pivot
Table, Group and Show Details, Group. Pick Months, Years and Days and click
OK. Then you can hide data by any of these groupings.
