How do I show gridlines over a chart area?

I'm trying to make the chart gridlines appear over the areas (not lines)
displayed on an Excel 2000 table. I'm thinking it's not possible, any advise
please?

The gridlines stay underneath all the plotted data, but the fake gridlines in some
of my examples lie on top (they're actually error bars of hidden series). See this
