Default Borders hidden by small blank pictures

When I open an Excel 2000 worksheet in Excel 2003, sometimes some of the
cell borders appear to be hidden. When I click one of those hidden borders,
I see six handles and a green rotate handle surrounding what appears to be
nothing. When I drag one or more of those handles, the object expands to a
large white rectangle. When I right-click on the white rectangle, one of the
options in the context menu is Format Picture.

These mysterious objects weren't in the Excel 2000 worksheets, but they
appear when opened in Excel 2003. Any idea what causes them and/or what to
do about them?

Thanks!
